The Pakistani show Dastaan which aired as Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam on Zindagi channel in India has come under the I&B ministry's scanner. Read on to know why...
Fawad Khan and Sanam Baloch's Zindagi show Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam was aired on the channel in April this year and it was described as a timeless love-story by the channel. But seems like the Information and Broatcast ministry didn't want to look at the show as just a love-story and have ordered the BCCC (Broadcast Content Complaints Council) to look into the content of the show as it is allegedly pro-Pakistan. Justice Mukul Mudgal who heads the BCCC has summoned Zindagi channel's executives seeking an explanation after the serious accusations were made. The I&B ministry also accused Zindagi channel of airing shows which are generally pro-Pak.
For the uninitiated, Fawad's show Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam was originally titled Dastaan when it aired in Pakistan. It is the story of Hassan aka Fawad and Bano aka Sanam Baloch, set against the backdrop of India-Pakistan partition. The serial is based on Razia Butt's book Bano, which is the story of a young girl whose family is slaughtered during the partition, and how she is separated from her betrothed, abducted by a Sikh man who torments her by repeatedly attempting rape on her and compelling her to change her religion. Bano also marries her abductor against her wishes and bears his child. Hassan on the other hand marries another girl named Rabia played by Mehreen Raheel, even though he never stops loving Bano.
Complaints registered against the serial accuse it of glossing over the trauma suffered by Hindus during the India-Pak partition. Some complaints made against the show also suggest how Sikhs and Hindus have been portrayed in an entirely negative light.
Executives from Zindagi channel have not released any statement regarding the controversy yet.
