Ian went all out on his discourse on acting, Shakespeare, homosexuality and cinema...
Last night was a treat to cinema lovers as the legendary actor Ian Mckellen came to Mumbai as a part of his tour around the world to speak about Shakespeare and the bard's influence on the culture and cinema across India. Aamir spoke to him about acting and issues related to it, his take on various adaptations of Shakespeare and his journey as an openly gay actor. Ian too very honestly and candidly participated in the discussion making it engaging with his little anecdotes and wisecracks.
Here are 5 best quotes from the session which will make you Mckellen's biggest fan!
1: He mocked India's regressive attitude towards homosexuality and spoke vehemently against the archaic article 377. "Presumably they had to pass it because there was so much homosexuality around. I've seen the statues! India needs to grow up. It does not need to follow British laws anymore.”
2: When asked by Aamir how he prepares himself before going on the stage he very candidly replied, "I make you sure that my fly is closed. Because in my experience, the audience look at your face first and crotch soon after."
3: On coming out to the world he said, ""I was 49 when I came out and it wasn't difficult because I was established as an actor and I was confident. To say it in public was a great relief and everything changed for the better. Be it your relationship, people around you or friends. My acting got better. I did not have to fake things.'
4: Speaking about Romeo and Juliet he said, "We've all fallen in love and probably with the wrong person. Juliet's father was trying to organise an arranged marriage. (To audience) You know what that means."
5: Sir Ian appropriately explained what makes Shakespeare relevant and not old fashioned in today's time and age. He said, "If you want to know what men of power are like, Shakespeare writes about that and shows you. He writes about situations which are melodramatic, which makes him relevant today.”
