It seems like Sanjay Leela Bhansali has become controversy's favourite child. The filmmaker has faced serious problems, be it shooting for his upcoming films or before its release. In the past, certain sections of people had opposed to the making of his films such as Bajirao Mastani or Padmaavat. And now his latest offering, Gangubai Kathiawadi, which stars Alia Bhatt in the lead, has come under the scanner. The residents of Kamathipura have strongly objected to the protrayal of the region as the famous red light area in Mumbai and termed the act as defamatory and shameful.
"The New Alia Bhatt Starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a blatant misrepresentation and an attempt to malign the 200 years of actual history of Kamathipura. It is defamatory, shameful and has hurt the sentiments of the residents of Kamathipura. The residents have worked hard to erase the social stigma attached to the name of Kamathipura, and this movie is extremely damaging to the current and future generations of Kamathipura," read the statement.
It further said, "Once again a few people are looking to monetize from the suffering of others and this time the residents of Kamathipura are choosing to not suffer in silence. Hundreds of residents of Kamathipura (Youth, women, children, etc) will be gathering at the center of Kamathipura to protest against the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi. They have also previously met with various decision makers and registered their complaint on the same." The protest will be held on March 7 at 12 pm onwards in Kamathipura.
The teaser of Gangubai Kathiawadi was launched a couple of weeks ago on Bhansali's birthday. It overflows with Bhansali's trademark of colours as well as bombastic dialogues such as "Gangu chaand thi aur chaand hi rahegi" and "izzat se jeeneka, kisi se darne ka nahi," mouthed by Alia Bhatt, who is seen hurling explicit words and engaging in action, in her role of Gangubai, a brothel owner in Mumbai's Kamathipura. Bhansali is known for his larger-than-life sets and opulent costumes, and the teaser promises just as much. The film is slated to release on July 30. The film is pitted against the romantic drama Radhe Shyam, starring Prabhas and Pooja Hegde.
