Gurdas Maan's latest song Punjab from his upcoming album is on everyone's lips. The hard hitting number has crossed over 10 million views in less than two weeks. You see, this time it's not some titillating dance sequence or raunchy lyrics that have caught the attention of the public, but a song about vices like drugs. Certainly, fans are loving the legendary singer's latest creation, and we met up with him to talk about how the idea of such a song was given shape.
I recently got an opportunity to meet the singer. Gurdas welcomed me to his home, where serving some delicious food to guests was a must, and we had a small chat about Punjab. We first talked about how the song has hit the 10 million mark already, and he said, "When you work hard for something, it definitely pays back. It was a big thing for me. I could have never thought in my life that a song could be such a big hit." You can easily spot the delight in his eyes and a mild discomfort for me referring to it as an album the entire time, instead of a song. The full album will be out on March 15.
Punjab, despite having the tricky themes of time travel, looks slick and impactful. Gurdas thanks his son Gurickk G Maan, who was silently sitting across our couch, for the perfect execution and picturisation of the song. Also, I did try to make Gurdas talk about the funny videos we see these days and about the unnecessary rap ones, but Gurdas is absolutely not the kind of person who would criticise someone behind their back. Here, watch the sweetest conversation ever, that our interview was:
Before we signed off, it was an opportunity to ask him when we will see him collaborate with Bollywood again. He did reveal that we will soon see him working in Bollywood, but refrained from divulging any more details, and in the most respectful way possible. A lot of so-called biggies can take a few notes from Gurdas ji on how to dodge a question they don't want to answer.
After this chat, I am sure eagerly looking forward to the full album.
