Bollywood thespian and one of the greatest actors in India cinema, Dilip Kumar celebrates his 93rd birthday today.
Born Muhammad Yusuf Khan, Dilip saab had started his career in 1944 with the film Jwar Bhata. From then on he played a variety of roles in films such as Andaz (1949), Aan (1952), Devdas (1955), the comic Azaad (1955), the historical Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and the social drama Ganga Jamuna (1961).In the mid '70s, he took a break from films for five years as his films releasing during that decade were not doing well. He later returned to Bollywood with a power packed performance in Manoj Kumar's Kranti that was released in 1981. From there on, he stuck to play on more character-driven roles in films such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991). His performance as the anguished journalist turned vendetta seeker in Yash Chopra's Mashaal was one of the best performances ever seen in Indian cinema. His last film was Qila in 1998. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. He has worked in around 60 movies and has inspired many upcoming B-town actors.
The actor is married to the still beautiful Saira Banu. Due to the floods in Chennai, Dilip saab had decided not to celebrate his birthday. Previously also he had ditched his birthday celebration plans, when his close friend and another Bollywood legend Dev Anand passed away.
