It is high time the west puts an end to stereotyping Indians
As all of you may be aware, the star British rock band Coldplay unveiled a video called Hymn for the Weekend which was 'supposed' to represent 'India'. All they managed was to portray the typical cliched perceptions that the West holds about India and frankly it has left all of us mighty pissed. It is about time that a befitting reply is given to shatter the stereotype and what better way to give it back than quoting Akshay Kumar's patriotic speech from Namastey London.
So dear Coldplay and Beyonce Knowles, this is what India is all about:
" We live in a country where we allow a lady of Catholic origin to step aside for a Sikh man to be sworn in as a Prime Minister by a Muslim President to govern a nation of over 80 percent Hindus."
This one is pretty self explanatory. India and Indian constitution prides itself on practicing secularism so people from all religions and all walks of life are free to preach and practice their religion. It is perhaps one of the very few countries in the world where people of different religions live together in harmony. The above political situation is a perfect example of inter religious brotherhood. So yeah, India is not just filled with sadhus and temples, but it also has a large number of mosques, gurudwaras, churches and synagouges.
Checkout Akshay's awesome speech about India and feel your chest swell with pride...
There are many more facts and anecdotes about our country that will just leave you speechless and will also make for good TV. So just a little suggestion to artists trying to tap the huge fan base in India - get your homework right coz you're mediocrity isn't appealing. And yes, we are NOT okay with this kind of appropriation!
