Nandita Das' directorial, Manto, based on the life of writer, Saadat Hasan Manto, is one of the most awaited films of the year. The film, which features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the lead, has the audience hooked ever since the makers dropped the trailer on Independence Day. The trailer showcased Manto's journey from Mumbai to Lahore. The film has won several accolades at International Film festivals and is ready to release this month in India. Whether Nandita's Manto does justice to the life of the writer or not, is something that we will only find out post the film's release. However, his daughters, Nuzhat Arshad and Nursat Jalal are quite convinced with Das' narration of their father's story.
During a recent interaction with Mid-Day, Nuzhat recollected the first meeting she had with Nandita, a decade back in Lahore, saying, "I believe Manto's personal life hasn't been given its due share of coverage. People should know the loving father and affectionate husband that he was. He was castigated during his lifetime, but he continues to be as relevant today as he was sixty-three years ago."
Saadat Hasan Manto's second daughter, Nusrat, also shared a few untold facts about her father, stating, "Manto did not shy away from helping around the house. He would even sweep the floor, so that his daughters could crawl around. He also made toys for us from discarded cigarette boxes and matchsticks." Quite an interesting man, we say!
What do you think of Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the lead in Manto? Will he be able to justify the writer's life? Pour your thoughts out in the comments section below.
