This ban on Pakistani artistes has brought out the best (worst?) in many Indian celebs. From the usual suspects like Anupam Kher, Mahesh Bhatt to the usual offenders like Salman Khan and Karan Johar everyone gave a piece of their mind and got one in return. Then there is Om Puri, he touched a new low when he spewed venom against Indian army and the martyrs of the Uri attacks and Baramulla attacks, in a recent debate on news channel. He said, "Who had asked the soldiers to join the army? Who told them to pick the weapons?" This obviously didn't go down too well with many and he was slammed on social media for his insulting remarks. The social media and news channel were buzzing with reactions to Om Puri's this statement. A day later the actor came out to speak on the matter again and this time to apologise for his remarks.
In his recent interaction with media, He not only took back the words he said against our Indian army but also cried sorry stating, "I am very embarrassed at what I said and I deserve punishment, not forgiveness. I first apologise to his (an Uri attack martyr) family, if at all they will forgive me, I apologise to the whole country, the army. I know it’s not justified that you say so much and then think a sorry will make it right. I am guilty and I deserve a punishment. I want to be tried by the army, I should be court-martialled. I want a constructive punishment. The army should teach me how to use weapons and send me on the same site where that brave man sacrificed himself for the country. I don’t want to be forgiven. I am pleading to the nation I want to be punished."
Puri received flak from his own fraternity as the comments didn’t go down well with many of his industry friends. But the thing to be noted here is that this comes at a time when a movie of his is up for release, titledGandhigiri. There are reports that he is doing all this just for the publicity of his films. As in the past he had condemned Aamir Khan for his remarks on social media and asked for an apology from him. His life has been controversial be it personal or his public appearances. In the past he has been accused of domestic abuse by his wife and an FIR was filed against the actor for the same. He was also accused of extra-marital affair by his wife. Annu Kapoor, who is his brother-in-law spoke at length about it and was highly pissed off with Om Puri. They have worked together after that in a movie but don't share a cordial relationship.
He was also in news for all wrong reasons when he turned up drunk at a hunger strike by Anna Hazaare and gave a speech for which he received lot of flak. He said, "Yeh anpadh hain… Aadhe se zyaada MP ganwaar hain..." (They are illiterate. More than half the MPs are country bumpkins.) "Yeh MPs kya karte hain? Paanch saal tak aish karte hain, lootate hain desh ko... main jaanta hoon inko, inke gharon mein kya hai" (What do the MPs do? They enjoy the five years, loot the country. I know them, I know what they have in their homes.)
So now we know whom we should not give much attention for he is a usual offender himself. This time though he went way below the belt. Let's see how much mileage he'll get from this move for his movie.
