Ashutosh Gowariker is back with Mohenjo Daro...
Mohenjo Daro releasing on August 12 is Ashutosh Gowariker's latest offering. Starring Hrithik Roshan and newbie Pooja Hegde, the film showcases a love story in world's first civilisation. People have high expectations from the film and also pressure will be on Ashutosh Gowariker to deliver a success after his last few films couldn't do well at the box office. Come August 12, he may deliver another masterpiece but here why we think he may never be able to top his best movie till date, Shah Rukh Khan starrer 2004 Swades. Of course he made Lagaan (2001) before that, which was nominated for Oscars in foreign category but then he made Swades. Though it was critically acclaimed, the film flopped at the box office. He later made a successful Jodhaa Akbar(2008) and duds like What's Your Raashee? (2009) and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey (2010). Swades follows the story of Mohan Bhargav (Shah Rukh Khan), a successful Indian scientist returns to an Indian village to take his nanny to America with him and in the process rediscovers his roots.
Here are a few reasons why Swades will always remain his best work:
#When we talk about patriotism in Bollywood, all we could think of, are war movies or movies with pre-independence era. Where Swades showed all of us, you don't have to be an army man or a freedom fighter to show your patriotism towards your nation. Right from the story to the premise to the acting, everything in the movie was as simple as it gets and yet it was so refreshing and nostalgic at the same time.
#There are many soul stirring moments in the movie, when Mohan is sent by Kaveri Amma to collect the debt from a farmer! It is still relevant with farmer suicides turning into an epidemic now.
#While on the way, when he sees a kid selling water on the platform. Kids are supposed to be the future of India but that future is on the streets living on nothing.
#Also the scene, when he has an argument in the village Panchayat over India as a country. We all feel for our nation but no movie has taught us to love our country with all its imperfections intact like Swades. Yes, mera bharaat mahaan but at what cost.
#Swades is perhaps the only film that addressed the brain drain issue so delicately without being preachy. The character arc of Mohan Bhargav, the way he goes through and feels different emotions for the first time in his life and the way his character changes from when the movie started to that towards the end. It's the story of his self discovery. The character has traits of Mahatma Gandhi, in fact the character's name Mohan is that of Gandhi's.
It's same like Ramesh Sippy made many movies after the cult classic Sholay (1975), but he was never able to topple it or Rajkumar Hirani is yet to topple 3 idiots (2009) or Aditya Chopra is yet to topple Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995). You know what I mean.
Ashutosh Gowariker may make many more blockbusters, which may go on to win many awards, but Swades is, and will always remain, his best.
