Imtiaz Ali is considered a cinematic genius in Bollywood and rightly so. The filmmaker who has captured our heart and mind with movies like Highway and Rockstar has a body of work that speaks of his mettle. And to say that he shows love in ways we don't, will be putting it timidly. That along with the sincerity of a story-teller who believes and lives his stories in all their complexities. But unfortunately, the same doesn't always translate into trade. Also Read: 3 films which prove Imtiaz Ali is modern day storyteller of classic love stories
Yes, so is the case in showbiz. A lot of factors play out before a film's fate is sealed and it is a declared a hit or flop but after the verdict is out, it is only the subsequent failure that is talked about. Which is exactly what happened, when after delivering hits, Imtiaz's Jab Harry Met Sejal starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma didn't live up to expectations. But mind you, it isn't something that disheartens him. In a group interview recently, the director finally opened up about the same and said, "I’m always questioning my craft. This is not the first or the last failure or disappointment that I’m going to have in life. I genuinely mean, I’ve gained more from my failures than from my successes." In fact, he also said that he has a stoic take on these things. "There’s only that much pain that actually hits me when I realise that something has fallen short of expectations. It doesn’t devastate me. It’s fine, both are equal to me," he added.
He also explained that he is too involved to dissect his own fruit of labour. "My analysis will always be biased. People around me who love me are biased, if I’m thinking from my brain, that’s only my perspective. It is very difficult to reach across that line and go that side and look. I try. After a film is done I don’t calculate it. I don’t get into postmortem. I let it go because it’s released and I can’t do anything." On the work front, he has donned the cap of a producer for Laila Majnu which is slated for a 7th September release.
