There is no stopping Hollywood this year...
Yet again, Hollywood has proved it's getting bigger and better in the Indian market with Independence Day: Resurgence crushing Raman Raghav 2.0 at the box office. The first weekend box office collection of Nawazuddin Siddiqui's film is a meagre Rs. 3.90cr whereas the Independence Day sequel has earned a whopping 16. 90 cr. That speaks volumes about where we are headed.
Taran Adarsh, Trade Analyst, shared the numbers which show a stark difference between the two in collections. He writes, "Hollywood dominates yet again... #IndependenceDayResurgence Fri 4.70 cr, Sat 5.80 cr, Sun 6.40 cr. Total: ₹ 16.90 cr nett. India biz." He also shared Raman Raghav 2.0's numbers saying, "Raman Raghav 2.0 Fri 1.10 cr, Sat 1.40 cr, Sun 1.48 cr. Total: ₹ 3.98 cr. India biz. #RamanRaghav2" You can clearly see the difference between the two. The first day collection of IDR was 4.70 cr while RR was at 1.10 cr. The average reviews also affected the film badly.
This isn't first time a Hollywood film has left Bollywood film behind. Deadpool which released alongside Fitoor became one of the successful films in India while the Katrina Kaif starrer tanked. The Jungle Book which preponed its release by a week to avert clash with Shah Rukh Khan's Fan couldn't equal the latter's opening day and weekend figures but the run it had post that was simply legendary. It is the highest grosser film in India this year. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice clearly had an edge over Rocky Handsome which released with it and it used the leverage to the T. Next came Captain America: Civil War which trumped a host of Hindi films while The Conjuring 2 took on Amitabh Bachchan's TE3N and won. Even The Angry Birds registered better opening than Phobia, Veerappan and others.
Clearly, it's time Bollywood filmmakers step-up the game or get into the habit of losing out to Hollywood films. Sultan needs to be our redemption now!
