It is heartening to see that TV actresses in soaps are doing a little more than just playing the dutiful and weepy bahu. From single working mom to a sociopath, the change has been quite refreshing. Yes, we have the stereotypes but what is notable is the fact that the different ones are getting a whole lot of love. So far, 2017 has been great performance wise, we have had Jennifer Winget, Aditi Rathore, Erica Fernandes upping their game to keep us hooked day in and day out.
The first half will be remembered for Erica’s poised performance as the independent mom of a daughter in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi to Aditi Rathore’s earnest acting in Naamkarann. She has been a surprise package. Of course, leading the pack is Jennifer Winget. The lady is Beyhadh wonderful as the schizophrenic Maya on the show. Rubina Dilaik, who also broke stereotypes with her role of a transgender in Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki is consistently good. Here is a look at the top actresses of 2017 so far…
She has been the surprise revelation of 2017. After Naamkarann’s leap, Aditi who was last seen in Ek Duje Ke Vaaste in a supporting role, was brought on board as the lead. The lady said she was a little nervous as Arsheen Namdaar, who played the younger version of Avani did a fabulous job. People love her power-packed performance as the revengeful Ananya/Avani and her chemistry with Zain Imam is also great. She also made news for her ‘prank breakup’ with beau Sreedhan Singh. Aditi is the one of the latest to join the league of side-y heroes who came into the limelight.
Respect. This is what Jennifer Winget is commanding from the entire TV fraternity after her stupendous performance as Maya in Beyhadh. Very few actresses would dare to take up a role that is unapologetically grey as Maya’s in the romance-thriller series. In the latest season, she did not even flinch from killing her own baby in the name of love. People either love Maya or hate her to the core but you cannot ignore her. Besides Jennifer, the makers also deserve credit for such a path-breaking show. The script might be a little patchy and irrational but then nothing is meant to be conventional in Maya’s world.
There is nothing two rupee about Surbhi Chandna’s performance as Anika. She is totally lovable as the high-society dork, with a mind of her own. Surbhi has done really well in the vulnerable emotional scenes but what is enjoyable is her comic timing. We need not comment on her sizzling chemistry with Nakuul Mehta, which has driven fans crazy and how! With her slightly unconventional looks, she is well-fitted for the part of the aspiring middle-class girl.
Erica who did a stint in South films made her TV debut with Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi. The lady wowed everyone as the independent, self-respecting and caring Dr Sonakshi Bose who placed respect before everything else. Many urban women identified with her character. Erica was in good form as the mother of a seven-year-old as well. We love the poise she has brought to her role and she is one of the best turned TV actresses on screen, on most occasions.
It is over a year but Rubina Dilaik has not lost any enthusiasm or steam to play Soumya, who is struggling with sexual orientation issues. From leaving home to becoming mom to an adopted baby, the show has seen it all. Rubina is consistently good and manages to win us over every time. The actress’ effortless chemistry with Vivian Dsena is the icing on the cake.
Kumkum Bhagya, despite its moments has largely been an over-extended drama – slow and tedious. However, the silver lining has been the performances of the lead actors – Shabir Ahluwalia and Sriti Jha. She might be repeating herself time and again, but Sriti always manages to charm us, and look fresh.
The pretty actress is winning hearts as the idealistic loving yet independent-minded Naira on the show. Shivangi looks great and excels in the romantic scenes. Her chemistry with Mohsin Khan is also fabulous.
