John Abraham and Sonakshi Sinha's Force 2 is releasing this weekend and after seeing the promos and hearing about the storyline, the film sounds really interesting. People have always loved seeing action films, but when you add John into the mix, he takes it to another level. The audience liked Sonakshi in Akira, so they might like her in Force 2. However, the biggest advantage Force 2 has, is that it is the sequel to a hit film - Force. But the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes, has impacted the box office very badly. So, we called up our trade expert - Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor) to know how well or bad the film will perform?
Talking about the buzz around Force 2 and expected collections, Akshaye mentions to us EXCLUSIVELY, "The buzz around Force 2 is pretty decent. I expect the film to open with a collection of Rs 6.50 - 7 crore, despite the demonetisation which affects the smaller towns more than the urban centres. At the end of weekend, Force 2 should have collected Rs 20 crore, but it does depend upon how the film turns out to be"
So, will the sequel factor help Force 2? Akshaye answers, "Honestly, irrespective of whether a film is a sequel or not, eventually what matters is the entertainment quotient and the merit of the film. It is not even a week since we saw the sequel of a cult film - Rock On and we know what happened. The first one was a cult in the urban centres, but the second one has turned out to be underwhelming and disappointing at the box office. The sequel factor helps with awareness, but eventually people decide to watch a film or not on the basis of the merit of the film and thankfully, it looks nice with Force 2." According to Akshaye, Force 2 has been made at a budget of Rs 40 crore (cost of production) and if you add the promotional and advertising costs, the budget will go up to Rs 50 crore. However, with a Rs 20 crore weekend, the film might recover the money and become a HIT too. Akshaye adds, "Rock On 2 hasn't worked, so all the exhibitors will be hungry for better content. Hence, Force 2 will get in excess of 2500 screens."
So currently, the scenario for John and Sonakshi's film is good. However, the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes will play a major role. As Akshaye explains, "It will have a significant impact, but we are hoping that by the time the film release on Friday, people will have withdrawn enough cash to afford watching a film. Obviously the priority of the people right now will not be to watch a film, if they don't have cash in hand. They will obviously want to figure out their groceries and more important stuff.
