In a recent interview, actress Juhi Chawla has revealed why she opted for a hush hush wedding with businessman Jay Mehta in 1995. The lady was in conversation with film critic Rajeev Masand. She told him that she was "afraid of losing her career". Juhi Chawla made a successful entry in Bollywood with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. In the 90's, she was part of blockbuster films like Darr, Bol Radha Bol, Aaina and Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke. She was also famous for her comic flair. The actress told Masand that the industry did not take married actresses too kindly and she had to make a prudent decision.
Juhi Chawla told Rajeev Masand, "I was just about established and doing well. That's the time Jay was serenading me and I was afraid of losing my career just when I had kind of got there. I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway." The marriage was a rather low-key affair. Only family members and friends knew about it. There were no grand festivities either. The lady said that lack of mobile cameras and social media made it easy. "At that time, you did not have the internet and you did not have cameras on every phone, so you could do it that way," Juhi said.
Juhi and Jay knew each other even before she had made her debut in Bollywood. After years, they met again at a dinner party and things clicked. It seems Jay wooed her like crazy. Juhi Chawla told Rajeev Masand, "From then on, everywhere I went, he turned up. Everywhere I looked, he was there with flowers and notes and gifts. Every day! On my birthday, I remember he sent me a truckload of red roses. I was like, 'What do you do with a truckload of flowers?' He really did all he could. After a year, he proposed." The couple have a son and daughter.
