Yes, today is the D-day for Balaji Motion Pictures backed
Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer
Udta Punjab made the right noise with it's first trailer. However, recently the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) mercilessly chopped 40 odd scenes to the movie that will definitely be given an A certificate. And then BollywoodLife in it's EXCLUSIVE report revealed that the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal, which is a part of the Censors had decided to issue a letter asking the makers to take off 'Punjab' and the mention of the state in the movie. Which meant that Shahid-Alia's this film would then have to be either rechristened as Udta or then something else. The reason we found was that the Board was facing political pressure from the Shiromani Akali Dal, a political group in Punajb that has reservations about their state's projection in this Abhishek Chaubey directorial venture.
We now have some fresh update on this situation of
Udta Punjab versus the Censor Board. A source revealed to BollywoodLife that the Censors and the makers are trying to come to a conclusion and the idea is to get a clarity on the certification. Our source said, "The decision will be made latest by today evening."
Censor Board this newest controversy with
clearance only goes on to show that the body is no longer free of politics. Will Udta Punjab succumb to political pressures? Can a film really tarnish a state's reputation? Well, the bigger picture to see is that the makers are dealing with a grave issue of addiction and youth being affected and it's a brave attempt on the part of the makers and the actors to tell a story that might reflect upon the vices of the society. We hope that good sense prevails and so does creative liberty for artists and filmmakers. Do come back here for more on Udta Punjab and Udta Punjab Censor Board's big fight!
