The year 2017 has been a breeding ground for some really uncalled for controversies. Right from Abhijeet Bhattacharya's ban on Twitter to Salman Khan's war comment that sparked anger, a lot of these rows aren't even worth the attention. And yet social media gave it the necessary limelight for it to become a big deal. While there were some interesting controversies such as Kangana Ranaut - Karan Johar's takes on nepotism, which brought in opinions from two sides of the topic. Similarly, the row revolving around musicians' plea to avoid asking actors to perform singing acts on a bigger platform when there are talents waiting to get a good stage for better exposure. By this, we mean the debate Sonakshi Sinha - The Malik brothers and the fraternity got engaged in. Another controversy that raised a lot of eyebrows was Akshay Kumar's win at National Awards for his performance in Rustom. Anyway, scroll below and check out all the controversies that rose to limelight!
#Kangana Ranaut-Karan Johar's nepotism tiff
The nepotism debate still persists in the industry ever since Kangana opened the can of worms! It all started when the Rangoon actress opened up about it on Koffee With Karan. She called Karan the flagbearer of nepotism and went on to say that he is the mafia of the industry. Obviously, this was blown out of proportion as KJo, too, gave it back, only to fuel more argument from Kangana's side. The war between these two is still on as just recently the actress has lashed out at his blog about nepotism. "When Karan Johar posted a blog on nepotism, I felt it was more of a brainwash than being objective," is what she said. Over to you KJo. (NEPOTISM DEBATE)
#Akshay Kumar's National Award win
This was a big shocker to everyone. As soon as Akshay was announced as a winner of the 64th National Awards for his performance in Rustom, fans flipped out. Trollers started working on making viral jokes about the actor. The jury, and especially filmmaker Priyadarshan, received maximum flak from Twitter for favouring the actor. Many were of the opinion that Priyadarshan’s proximity to Akshay Kumar is the reason for his undeserving win. Talking to Mumbai Mirror, when Akshay Kumar was asked to react to the same, he said, “I have completed 25 years in the film industry and I’ve never called in a favour to bag a movie or an award. As for Priyan favouring me, I think he has answered that question in your newspaper.” (AKSHAY'S BIG WIN!)
#Abhay Deol fairness debate
One fine day, Abhay Deol's Facebook page became rather too active as he took major digs at celebrities who endorsed fairness creams. For this, the only person to react and attack him was Sonam Kapoor. Obviously, it just put her in bad light as Abhay had a stronger argument stating how people are stupid enough to realise that fairness creams use actors who already have a fair complexion. #Priyanka Chopra's 'legs' controversy
Just recently PeeCee had an impromptu meet with PM Narendra Modi in Germany as both were in the same city. An image from their meeting was shared by the diva, which received major hate from fans. Twitterati stated that it was disrespectful of her to flaunt her legs and wear "skimpy" clothes when visiting with the PM. It unnecessarily escalated. However, the Baywatch actress had a good comeback for all the haters when she posted a pic with her mother, both flaunting their legs. (THE UNNECESSARY HATE)
#Mira Rajput's take on motherhood
For the first time, after being married to Shahid Kapoor, Mira addressed the media at an event regarding motherhood. However, what should've been her moment of glory soon turned unfavourable as her comments hurt many. She said that she didn't want to be one of those mothers who only spend an hour or two with their kids and rush to work. She further went ahead and said, "She is not a puppy; I want to be there for her as a mother.” This definitely didn't go down well with ANYONE, especially animal lovers. Soon her comments were met with a lot of jibes and trolls. (MIRA'S TAKE ON MOTHERHOOD)
#Sonakshi Sinha singing at the Justin Bieber concert vs the singers community
The fact that Sonakshi might perform at the Justin Bieber concert became a big issue for a few singers of the fraternity. It opened a new realm of debate of whether actors, who have no background in singing, should be given big platforms to perform. The industry was divided in two as many supported the actress and many vouched for Armaan Malik's statement that it's unfair for actors to perform, when there are talented singers. (THE BAD RHYTHM)
#Lipstick under my Burkha
A movie that glorifies womanhood received a major jolt when the CBFC decided to NOT rate the movie. Yeah, they called the movie highly unsuitable for the Indian audience (even adults) for it's mature contents that basically has women talk about masturbation, person sexual acts and stuff like that. They didn't want the movie to be released. Further, to add more trouble to the movie, the use of the word Burkha offended a community, who also stood against the release of the film. (THE LIPSTICK WAR)
#Abhijeet banned on Twitter
People had had enough of singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya. Perhaps that's why they were just waiting for a moment when he'd disappear from Twitter. And that did happen when he started with one of his rants. His derogatory tweets about women certainly didn't gain him brownie points on the platform as someone reported his account and Twitter, like a bawse, deleted his account! Funny, he started yet another account and said his voice can't be shunned by such puny moves. Again, his account was deleted by the microblogging site. (SINGER'S LAST DAY ON TWITTER)
#Sonu Nigam's azaan rant
One fine morning, we all woke up to Sonu Nigam's angry rants against azaan. “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India,” he tweeted. “And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam.. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison I don’t believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity To wake up people who don’t follow the religion . Why then..? Honest? True? Gundagardi hai bus…” he said, in a consecutive series of tweets further. You can guess what happened next. (SONU'S AZAAN RANT)
#Salman Khan's war comment
When it comes to a list of controversies, has Salman ever NOT made it? Although this time, he's not at fault and yet he was attacked. At a press interaction, the actor made a very sensible statement, saying, “People who order war should be asked to go to war themselves. Take this gun and go to war. (They will realise it) and it will get over in a day. They will tremble and shake and they will eventually take the route of dialogues and discussions.” Made sense? Not to many blind politicos though, who called his remarks stupid and asinine. (SALMAN'S WAR COMMENT)
#Kangana taking writing credits for Simran
Simran’s writer and editor Apurva Asrani slammed the actress in his Facebook post, revealing everything about how the director Hansal Mehta asked him to share story credits with her. Oh yes, trouble is a friend to Kangana who has faced not one but two controversies so far. (THE CREDIT SCENE)
