One of the best aspects of 2016 was that none of the shows launched were the saas-bahu sagas. Even Meri Saasu Maa was not the typical household drama. However, shows with supernatural angles reigned and how. Here is a look at 10 shows that shone brightly some on the TRP charts and others in audience’s minds
Kasam…Tere Pyaar Ki
The replacement for Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi, this Ssharad Malhotra – Kratika Sengar show had a lackluster first episode but speedily picked up steam. The crackling chemistry between the lead pair, terrific bromance of Ssharad-Lalit Bisht-Zuber Khan and funny lines make it an entertaining watch. The TRPs are consistently over 2.
Bahu Humari Rajni_Kanth
Not many people gave this show a chance when it was first launched. A comedy revolving around a robot, which finds itself married into a large family, Bahu Humari Rajni_Kanth is hailed as one of the more progressive shows on TV. Written and produced by Sonali Jaffar, it has made debutant actress Riddhima Pandit a household name. It took the No.1 slot for Life Ok before Nagarjuna took over.
Nagarjuna
The show took the top slot on Life Ok in the first week itself. A mytho-thriller, it is a lavish production with huge sets and special effects. Not the usual naag-naagin love/revenge story, it is a thriller where the NaagLok wants to conquer the heaven and earth. The ensemble cast is doing a good job so far. It is the most expensive show with a daily budget of Rs 1.5 crore.
Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi
Sony TV has got a huge boost in viewership after the launch of The Kapil Sharma Show, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi and Ek Duje Ke Vaaste. Though this show started off with lower TRPs than Crime Patrol, Suryaputra Karn and Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman, it is slowly picking up pace. The lead pair of Shaheer Sheikh and Erica Fernandes have become a rage. The fact that it is a love story dealing with the complexities of human relationships has helped as well.
The Kapil Sharma Show
It is the No.1 show on Sony TV and not surprisingly so. Kapil Sharma has a huge fan following and he has his fabulous team to back his efforts. We must consider that the 9pm slot is a fiercely competitive one and staying on top is not ready.
India’s Got Talent 8
The ratings of IGT this year have surprised many. It is the slot leader for 9pm on weekends, which is a spectacular achievement. A wide array of top class performances from all over the country keeps the viewers enthused.
Ek Duje Ke Vaaste
Launched on the same date as Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, it is the love story between Suman (Nikita Dutta) and Shravan (Namik Paul). The leading man is sending women into a tizzy with his good looks and the bittersweet love story is an icing on the cake. The TRPs are mostly similar to KRPAB but the show has a huge fan following on online platforms.
May I Come In Madam
Okay…this show might not have great numbers on TRPs but it doing quite well for SAB TV. People who have seen it say it is genuinely funny. It is made by the same team that gave us F.I.R and Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain. Sandeep Anand and Neha Pendse are doing a fabulous job.
Dahleez
A no-show on the TRP charts, it is one of the critically appreciated shows in recent times. Set in Delhi, it tells the story of an IAS officer Adarsh (Harshad Arora) and a lawyer (Tridha Choudhury) who fall in love amidst varied ideologies. A crisp storyline, good performances and terrific chemistry will make us miss Dahleez as it goes off air in a few days.
Jaana Na Dil Se Door
When it was launched quite a few were apprehensive about the unfavourable time slot i.e. 5.30 pm. However, Vikram Singh Chauhan’s power-packed performance as Atharva has won many hearts. The romantic angle and superb chemistry are the high points. With the show getting shifted to 10.30 pm, ratings might pick up too.
