Kullfi Kumar Bajewala review: Aakriti Sharma steals the show with her spontaneity in this emotional story

Here is what we felt about the first episode of Kullfi

Today, Star Plus aired the first episode of Kullfi Kumar Bajewala. The show is an adaptation of the hit Star Jalsha show Potol Kumar Gaanwala. Ishqbaaaz producer Gul Khan is producing the show along with Nilanjana Purkayasstha. It is an emotional story of a little singing prodigy who is on the hunt for her father who deserted her mother. The Bengali show was a TRP topper and it is easy to see why it got an Hindi version. It has emotions, drama, music and all the masala to make a hit daily. What's it about?
Young Kullfi (Aakriti Sharma) is the prodigiously talented daughter of a single mother. She lives with her mama and his family in Punjab. Her mother is not supportive of her pursuit of music as she deserted by a singer, Sikander Singh Gill (Mohit Malik). He married her only to leave her. Kullfi's mami (Pallavi Rao) is the typical vamp who does not lose an opportunity to berate her sister-in-law and her kid. Young Kullfi wants to meet her father once but no one pays heed to her request.

What's hot...
The biggest takeaway is Aakriti Sharma's performance. She is as cute as a button with good screen presence. The best part is that she does not have the heightened sense of self awareness, which makes for annoyingly precocious kids in films and TV. We see little of Mohit Malik as Sikander Singh Gill in the first episode but he is looking every inch a rockstar with the studded jacket and all that jazz. Like Gul Khan's Ishqbaaaz, the production of the show is quite good. The village set up looks very realistic and makes for a pleasant watch. What's not..
The scene where Kullfi's mother runs behind Sikander's car is melodramatic and unintentionally funny. We hear that the role of Kullfi's Maami is a huge hit in the Bengali show but here Pallavi Rao's performance is OTT to another level. She is loud and constantly contorts her face. The fact that she had considerable screen time in the first episode was not too appealing.

Verdict
Kullfi Kumar Bajewala seems to be a refreshing story centered around a child protagonist. Tomorrow, we will see the full-fledged entry of Mohit Malik. If you love emotional dramas, you might want to watch this tale of an innocent girl's search for her daddy dearest.
