The box office numbers in the US for South Indian films have been terrific and the trend continues with the latest releases like Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and Nani-Nagarjuna starrer Devadas. These two films are now inching close to the golden number of $1 million and will make the list of the elite club longer. Chekka Chivantha Vaanam has clocked a staggering $785,335 till October 2nd since release which is the highest for any Mani Ratnam film in the US. On the other hand, Devadas starring Akkineni Nagarjuna and Nani has clocked $735,460 approximately till Tuesday and will soon enter the $1 million club going by the pace of the collections.
Chekka Chivantha Vaanam has had a similar run at Indian box office too with the collections in Tamil Nadu standing at Rs 35 crore approximately. This Mani Ratnam directorial has been having a terrific run in Chennai city too with the contributions to the overall collections standing at approximately Rs 12 crore till Tuesday. Chekka Chivantha Vaanam was released in Telugu as well titled Nawab and the collections of the Telugu version too has been good in the Telugu states.
On the other hand, Devadas has had a similar run in India as well with both the Telugu states earning a collection of approximately Rs 29 crore since release. Devadas has received mixed reviews from critics but the audience has given unanimous thumbs up to the film. Directed by Sriram Aditya, Devadas has Nani and Nagarjuna sharing crackling chemistry onscreen with few hilarious moments.
