Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut's Mental Hai Kya has grabbed all the attention since its inception. The film was earlier scheduled to release in March but due to incompletion of patchwork, the makers postponed the release. In fact, recently the producers revealed the new release date, which is June 21 along with a new poster of Mental Hai Kya featuring the lead cast. Even Rajkummar Rao had shared it on Twitter and had written, "Madness has made its cut! Catch Mental Hai Kya in theatres on 21st June 2019. #MentalHaiKya #MentalHaiKyaOn21stJune #KanganaRanaut @ektaravikapoor @pkovelamudi @RuchikaaKapoor @ShaaileshRSingh @KanikaDhillon."
However, amidst all the buzz it has garnered, there is also a lot of noise of the flak it has drawn from mental health experts who feel that the title is stigmatising mental illness further and the poster is especially triggering in its portrayal. According to The Hindu, The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) on Thursday wrote to the CBFC, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Prime Minister’s Office to draw attention towards their objections about the title. Something that they feel is "discriminative, stigmatising, degrading and inhuman in projecting mental disorders and persons." The IPS has asked to discard the title for the same reasons and censor any material that may violate the rights of mental health patients. The group also plans to file a PIL if the changes are not made.
"We strongly demand that the title be removed with immediate effect preventing further damage to the modesty of mental health service users. We also demand to censor any sequence in the movie that is violating the rights of persons with mental disorder," the letter read. Even Twitter is filled with similar concerns.
Mental Hai Kya is directed by National award-winning Telugu filmmaker, Prakash Kovelamudi, who is making his Bollywood debut with the film. Prakash is known for helming films like Bommalata and Anaganaga O Dheerudu. It marks the second collaboration between Rajkummar and Kangana after Queen (2014).
