Disney’s Queen Of Katwe to release on October 7th in India. Queen of Katwe is a heartwarming and riveting drama. Based on real-life events, the film chronicles the inspiring story of an underdog from the streets of rural Uganda.
She is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Starring Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, Oscar winner and Tony Award nominee Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga, the film is slated to hit Indian theatres in September. If the poster and the fact that Mira Nair is directing this film already didn’t do the trick then the fact that David Oyelowo of Selma fame and Lupita N’yongo of 12 Years a Slave has gotta do it! The fact that such crazy talented artists coming together to put up a show in itself speaks volumes of how brilliant the film is going to be.
The story of Queen of Katwe is about a 10 year old Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga), who has been living her life in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda under constant struggle to make ends meet. Harriet, (Nyong’o) her mother constantly strives to make sure her kids have meals in a day and the roof on their head stays put. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. What follows next is how she breaks out of her poverty stricken milieu and aces the game of chess!
