The current season has two bisexual contestants. While some might think that Splitsvilla 8 is progressive in addressing as well as showcasing alternate sexuality, my opinion is different. Here’s why…
MTV Splistvilla is on its 8th season currently and is being hosted by Sunny Leone and Rannvijay Singha. This show has been a hit amongst the youth since its very beginning, owing to its high voltage drama. Be it heartbreaks, love or betrayal, this show has it all and the aam janta can’t seem to get enough of it. Every season, Splitsvilla gets bolder with its format. Where earlier a smooch between contestants was edited from the series, the one between Ashwini Koul and his ladylove Sanjana was shown in broad daylight during the last season. I was glad that the same happened. If kisses and love making scenes can be accepted as a part of Bollywood films, then why not in Television?
Most of today’s youth, has a progressive mindset. Hence when alternate sexuality is showcased in a TV show, it shouldn’t become a problem for the youngsters to accept the same right? But how does one react when bisexuality is used as a medium to generate humour? I’m not sure about others but this practice makes me cringe. This season has two bisexual contestants- Karishma and Gaurav Arora. Karishma chose to casually reveal her sexual identity, only to get a shocking response from her fellow contestants who went “What?” Like I said, MOST of the youth is progressive but not all and this incident is proof enough of the same.
This incident was followed by a dumping session where Karishma’s close friend got eliminated. It was revealed that she had feelings for her gal pal and hence was shattered by the latter’s eviction. Karishma decided to say goodbye with a kiss. Now here’s where the problem arose. Instead of presenting the smooch as a romantic gesture, the makers decided to make a mockery out of it. The contestants were shown laughing at the same and were joined by host Rannvijay! Also, the kissing scene was accompanied by a smooch sound in the background, which was put in to add a “humorous” element to the event. Check out the video below:
I wouldn’t call such treatment, as progressive. Apart from this, what’s even more baffling is the fact that the kiss between Ashiwini and Sanjana was presented as a lovey dovey one. But the minute two girls do it, it’s somehow very funny.
Coming to Gaurav, I have noticed that a particular background track is played for the lad, every time he appears on-screen. And what is it? “Munna saada doli chadh gaya band baj gaya” from Dostana. I don’t think I need to specify how utterly homophobic this particular song is. The fact that it’s used as an entry track for Gaurav, itself speaks volumes about the regressive thinking that the makers of this show, have.
Stereotyping an alternate sexuality, is the last thing this country needs let alone making a mockery out of it. If MTV Splitsvilla 8 wishes to thrive on TRP’s with such practice, then I’m afraid this show isn’t too “great” like its host Sunny claims it t be. Before figuring out what “women want,” I believe the makers should try and find out what the LGBT community wants, and i.e being treated as normal and NOT a joke to seek publicity!
