He was not sure whether he could pull off the antagonist's role.
24 is turning out to be Kollywood's biggest hit of the year, thanks to Suriya's brilliant performance, Vikram Kumar's taut direction and screenplay, and its unique premise. The film has received some very glowing performances, including one from us as well, for being one of the best and well-written blockbusters released in recent times (actually in a long time!).
Everyone just loved how Suriya made the three roles in the film so very distinct. He was very good as the meek and good-natured scientist, and his street-smart son. However, his standout performance happened to be that of the villain, Athreya. This was a villain who was not just terrifying; he was also equally brilliant and he uses that to his advantage at manipulating people as well as time to his advantage. Suriya was too perfect in the film.
It was to our surprise that we learn that it was not Suriya, but Mahesh Babu who was the first choice to play the lead/s in the film. In a interview to TNM, he had revealed this. "I really liked the subject when I heard it from Vikram. Even though I was interested in the project, I couldn't visualize myself in triple roles, especially as the antagonist Aathreya. I felt I might not be able to do full justice to the roles. Hence, I backed off."
While we understand Mahesh Babu's apprehensions, it would have been really cool to see the handsome actor play a negative role for the first time in his career. Mahesh Babu will next be seen in Brahmotsavam, directed by Srikanth Addala.
