The screenwriter asserts that he deserves more than a Padma Shri
One name among those nominated for the Padma Shri Award this year was Salim Khan, the renowned screenwriter. But in a shocking turn of events, the legendary writer turned down the award and maintains that he deserves more than a Padma Shri.
Talking to a leading tabloid, Mr Khan asserted, " Refused is too strong a word since I have nothing against the awards. I just think that after 55 years and over 40 films, I deserve more than a Padma Shri for my contributions to Hindi cinema, given that my juniors have already got it years before. Even my erstwhile partner, Javed Akhtar, received both a Padma Shri and a Padma Bhushan.
Salim also asserts that while he and Javed have bagged 6 Filmfare awards as a team, Salim's name was conveniently forgotten when the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards were granted to Javed Akhtar. The writer confesses to the same tabloid that, after what happened, he wouldn't accept a Padma Bhushan either as it would set a wrong example and that awards do not excite him anymore and that he has never craved for one.
Despite his refusal, Salim clears that he has nothing against the ruling government or PM Narendra Modi. "Modi Saab and I share a relationship of mutual respect that goes back to before he became a PM and is beyond all this" adds Khan.
