It was an important day for Marvel Studios today, after all, it finally won its first Oscar award courtesy Black Panther. Although Marvel Studios has found nominations several times over the years, for movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange, the renowned superhero movies production house has never taken the golden trophy back home. But things changed with Black Panther at the 91st Academy Awards. The Ryan Coogler directorial had already made history by bagging the Best Picture nomination. The superhero movie was nominated for seven categories including Best Picture. While Green Book took home the star award of the night, Black Panther bagged three Academy Awards at the Oscars 2019, giving Marvel Studios not one but three Oscars in one year.
Black Panther won Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects. Ruth E. Carter’s win not only paved way for Marvel Studios first Oscar victory in its history, Carter’s win also meant something more. Entertainment Weekly notes that Carter became the first black woman to win Best Costume Design. In her acceptance speech, she said, “Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design we turned him into an African king. It’s been my life’s honor to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy. Thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen. Adding vibrainaum to costumes is very expensive!”
The international publication also reveals that Hannah Beachler’s Best Production Design is also historical because she became the first black person to ever be nominated for Best Production Design.
“I stand here stronger than I was yesterday, I stand here with agency and self-worth because of Ryan Coogler. You’re not only made me a better designer, a different storyteller, a better person; I stand here because of this man who offered me a better perspective of life, who offered me a safe space, who is patient, and gave me air, humanity and brotherhood, thank you Ryan, I love you. I am stronger because of Marvel, who gave me the opportunity to do my best, who supported the vision of this film and lifted us up every day. Victoria Alonso, Kevin Feige, Louis Esposito and ... Nate Moore, thank you,” Beachler said in her speech.
These three victories just added more feathers to Black Panther’s achievements. The Marvel movie made history by earning $1.346 billion on the international box office. The Oscar nominated movie is preparing for Black Panther 2.
