Paltan quick movie review: The film simmers in the first half, promising a war post interval

JP Dutta is returning to the movies after a while but he has stuck to his favourite genre - war drama. Having grown up on a steady diet of the filmmaker's fare, we are kind of aware of what to expect from Paltan. A quick Google search tells us that the film is about the 1967 Indo-China military clash at Nathu La. We are catching the first day, first show of the film. It is interval time and gets what we think of it so far...

India is defending its Sikkim border at Nathu La and is strengthening its base there by gathering troops. Everyday verbal altercations punctuated by a lot of tactical moves and strategical planning makes up for the first half. The soldiers all bond amongst themselves, sharing stories of their women back home, and shout at the top of their voices in anger at the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1962. We see them frustrated with Chinese trickery of being all friendly but making dubious moves from time to time. The tension builds on the first half and the film had all the makings of a war in the second half. But as pointed out already in the film, no soldier wants a war. So will the Paltan manage to avert a war or will they have to battle it out? Let's find out...
