When did this happen?
The case relates to the March 28, 2015 rape of a 35-year-old American, a student at New York's Columbia University, who was in the Capital for research work on her doctoral thesis.
How did the American woman meet Mahmood Farooqui?
The lady first met the director in Varanasi when she went to him for deets on Baba Gorakhnath, her research subject.
Where did Farooqui rape her?
According to her complaint, when she went to meet him again in regards to the same research at his South Delhi apartment, she was raped by him. In fact, during this trial, she alleged that after raping her, Farooqui even sent her many apology emails which later became handy evidence in the case along with call records. She also mentioned in the court how she informed a friend on whatsapp that she is upset with Farooqui.
Victim's lawyer Vrinda Grover feels the verdict is particularly significant due to a 2013 amendment that made forced oral sex a crime. Soon after the court's judgement, she said, "This is perhaps one of the first cases of forced oral sex, which shows two things: that there was a crime for which we did not earlier have an offense named, now it has been recognized as rape. We’re also very happy to see that the court relied on very credible evidence that the woman gave.”
Farooqui's wife's reaction
“Our fight for justice is by no means over. We will approach the High Court for justice that has been denied to us."
