We told you a few days back that Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui has been found guilty of raping an American woman. The sentence was reserved and now it has been declared. He has been sentenced to 7 years jail for the heinous crime.
A daily reported that Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain, had found Farooqui guilty and had fixed August 2 as the date when the quantum of punishment was supposed to be read out. Now the details of the punishment has been revealed. He's found guilty under section 376 of IPC and was awarded with 7 years of imprisonment. Farooqui was accused of raping the American scholar in Delhi at his place in Sukhdev Vihar on March 28, 2015. Delhi Police sought extreme punishment of life imprisonment for the filmmaker as he brought 'disrepute to the country'. Police argued that since he belongs to the higher strata of the society, he had 'an additional responsibility on him not to conduct himself in a such a manner'.
The American woman first met the director in Varanasi when she went to him for deets on Baba Gorakhnath, her research subject. According to her complaint, when she went to meet him again in regards to the same research, she was raped by him. When the trial was on, she alleged that after raping her, Farooqui had sent her many apology emails which later became handy evidence in the case along with call records. She also mentioned in the court how she informed a friend on whatsapp that she is upset with Farooqui.
