When two big stars clash at the box office, it's bound to stir excitement among fans, especially if it between two arch rivals - Mammootty and Mohanlal.
Who will win? Whose movie will fall flat? Who's film will mint money at the box office? And most importantly who will beat whom? So, last Friday was a situation very much like that when Mohanlal's Pulimurugan and Mammootty's Thoppil Joppan hit theatres. Now here's the situation on either side. Starting with Mohanlal, with the release of Pulimurugan, it was Mohanlal's 4th release. And to top it all, all his previous movies minted money at the box office. Right from Manamantha to Janatha Garage to and the most recent Oppam, Mohanlal was on a dream run. So would the winning streak continue with Pulimururgan or would it fall so flat that it sort of negated all profits? Mohanlal was surely experimenting with this film, and would this risk be worth it? AS for Mammootty, his super duper hit movie Kasaba was was soon followed by White, his biggest flop till date. So for the superstar, Thoppil Joppan success was essential. It wouldn't do to have two consecutive flops. So at the end of the opening weekend where do both movies stand? Turns out Mohanlal's risk with Pulimururgan more than paid off as the movie received glowing reviews aparting from minting heavily at the box office. On its first day, it went to collect Rs 4.08 crore, coming second to Rajinikanth's Kabali at the Kerala Box office. Day 2 reports stated that it crossed Rs 7 crore by Saturday. And now the latest reports suggest, the movie has already crossed the Rs 10- crore mark. Everyone has loved Mohanlal's wild hunter act so much so theatres came under pressure to increase their screenings. As for Thoppil Joppan, the movie has also received positive review. The comedy entertainer has struck a chord with the audience and has managed to mint Rs 2.03 as per certain reports and some reports state that it has earned Rs 1.65 crore. It has gone on to collect another Rs 3 crore approx in the next two days making a total collection of Rs 4-5 crore. But here's the thing - even though both movies have done well if we go by the numbers, Mohanlal has BEAT Mammootty in the box office clash. Looks like history repeats itself as in 2001, both stars had a clash where their movies released on the same day - Mammootty's Rakshasarajavu vs Mohanlal's Ravanaprabhu. reportedly it was a big war at the box office which eventually Mohanlal's Ravanaprabhu won. So he has done it again! But we will know who the real winner is at the end of ten days. So let's see if Mohanlal's Pulimurugan still stands a winner or Mammootty's Thoppil Joppan manages to catch up and beat his contemporary.
