Radhika Apte is celebrating her birthday today. In the past few years, she has been recognised as one of the powerhouse actors of the Indian film industry. Radhika has worked in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu films. While many identified her as a talented lady early on, it was Badlapur in 2014 that helped her grab eyeballs. Her performances in films like AndhaDhun, Manjhi, Phobia, Kabali earned her immense appreciation. Radhika Apte has also made headlines for her fiery and bold statements. Here is a look at some of her opinions that made people sit up and take notice...
When she questioned the 'psychotic mentality' of society over her leaked sex scene with Dev Patel from The Wedding Guest
The film The Wedding Guest has many other beautiful sequences and the fact that one particular sex scene got leaked is because of the psychotic mentality of society. The leaked sex scene featured both Radhika Apte and Dev Patel in it. But the scenes are being spread in my name. Why is it not getting spread under the male actor Dev Patel's name?
When she said that she was totally comfortable with going bold
I had no apprehensions about going bold. I have been brought up watching world cinema and I have travelled a lot so I am very comfortable with my body. I have seen people performing nude on stage in India and abroad. I don't see why I should be ashamed of my body. That's the one tool I use as a performer. I had no apprehensions doing bold scenes.
When her statement on monogamy and marriage went viral
I believe in falling in love with many people. I love too many people at the time also on various levels and in various ways. Like how I could love dancing and acting, why can’t I love you and you in different ways? So I don’t punish myself or tell myself ‘Oh my God, what happened’”. Monogamy or being with one person has to be a choice made every day. It can’t be a compulsion. I need to make that choice every day, wake up and say this is the person I want to be with.
When she spoke about her passion for interesting work
I always take up interesting and inspiring work. In a way, it's like an investigative work because we get to explore so many things in our life while acting so, I really like being on the sets of films.
When Radhika Apte stated she did not like the word 'outsider' in the industry
I don't like the word outsider. If I'm a director and my son wants to be an actor, why shouldn't I launch him? The industry today is a blend of both worlds. On one hand, there's Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut who were not born into a film family but have made it big and then there are the star kids.
When she discussed how she managed her long-distance relationship with her husband
It's really important to take time out to meet each other in an LDR [Long Distance Relationship]. In our case, we're committed to being together for a few days every month - sometimes we even cancel other plans to make that happen. There have been times when it turns into a month-and-a-half due to our schedules, but we don't ever stretch it beyond that. If you really want to be with somebody, you make that effort; it automatically becomes a priority. And it's very intuitive, it's what we need, and what we want to do.
When she opened up on her casting couch experience
Oh once I got a call. Yes yes wait. Once I got a call and they said ‘they’re doing this film in Bollywood and I want you to have a meeting with them. But would you be okay sleeping with that person?’ And I laughed! I said you’re so funny, you’re very funny and I said no I’m not. Ask him to go to hell (laughs).
