Recently reports suggested that the government may change its mind and replace Gajendra Chauhan from the post of FTII head with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani. While many celebrated this report, a few were still skeptical as no official confirmation came their way. However, today we can confirm that the PK director was never going to replace Chauhan as the academic council head.
According to sources, the filmmaker turned down the position as he will be pre-occupied with work and won't be able to give enough time to the institute. As Raju's spokesperson said in a statement, "On behalf of Rajkumar Hirani, we clarify that he is not replacing Gajendra Chauhan, who is heading the governing council of FTII. He has been asked to head the academic council but will not be able to take it up as his film work keeps him occupied and he would not have the bandwidth to handle FTII work. However, he will continue helping from the outside to end this deadlock between the ministry and the students."
Meanwhile the deadlock between the government and students continues with Gajendra Chauhan still in charge. The students are now threatening to go on an indefinite hunger strike. The students have gone on an indefinite strike since June 12 protesting the Information & Broadcast Ministry’s appointment of television actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as Chairman of the institute. Given his limited artistic abilities and dubious capabilities in helming an institute as prestigious as the FTII, students are disappointed about the fact that their new Chairman is a BJP party worker. They feel the appointment is an attempt by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government to foist its right-wing agenda upon the institute.
