Ranveer Singh is killing it everywhere these days. Be it with his latest releases, setting husband goals or attending weddings. He is just unstoppable. And after the mega success of his films Simmba and Gully Boy, the actor is all set for his next project, '83. The biopic on Kapil Dev, which celebrates India's big win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, is being directed by Kabir Khan and Ranveer has already started preps for the same.
The actor has started training with one of the original team members from the 1983 winning team in Mumbai. Balwinder Singh Sandhu has been helping the actor master his strokes. In a recent interview with DNA, Ranveer mentioned that he realises he must work harder on his bowling action and since childhood, as he was a decent batsman, batting was never an issue. It's his bowling that has been a challenge. He said, “Ballu sir, as we call him, is an amazing coach. I train with him for four hours everyday in Mumbai. I focus on my bowling and do a lot of physio. I’m doing better in batting because from my childhood, I’ve had a natural ability for it. I’m a good fielder too. But I need to work particularly hard on my bowling.”
While there were reports a while back that Ranveer would train under Kapil Dev himself as he will be essaying his character in the film, they haven't started working together yet. Ranveer further said in the interview that he intends to observe every move and gesture of the veteran cricketer to be able to play him convincingly. He said, “I’m hoping to become his shadow. I will follow him wherever he goes and try to pick as much as possible from him. I hope to get some tips on bowling and batting from the man himself. I have never done this before. This will be a first for me, a unique process of spending time with the person I play on screen.” And Ranveer surely is not leaving any stone unturned in the process. From visiting all the places where Kapil Dev played to meeting the people who played with him, he's doing it all.
Helmed by Kabir Khan and bankrolled by Phantom Films, Vishnu Vardhan Induri of Vibri Media, Reliance Entertainment and Kabir Khan Films, '83 is the story of 14 men who brought about an epic moment in the history of Indian cricket by winning the World Cup in England. The winning squad comprised Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Kirti Azad, Yashpal Sharma, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Roger Binny, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Sandeep Patil, Syed Kirmani, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar and Sunil Valson, and their manager P R Man Singh. The film will see Ranveer playing Kapil Dev, Ammy Virk playing Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Jiiva as Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Sahil Khattar in the role of Syed Kirmani and now Chirag Patil as Sandeep Patil. According to a report by Mumbai Mirror, Saqib Saleem and Punjabi sensation Harrdy Sandhu will be seen playing Mohindar Amarnath and Madan Lal, respectively.
The movie is slated for an April 10, 2020 release and will go on the floors in May, after a 10-day “bonding and training session” in Dharamshala.
