Known for her distinctive singing style, Rekha will be seen singing for the movie that has been adapted from a 65-year old Punjabi play...
Recently the movie Saavi - A Bonded Bride was in news, for its strong content. The film was under a lot of scrutiny from the Censor Board because of the story line. But considering the latest outrage of the Board, the film went on the back burner. However, now there is some news back of the same. Saavi is one of the six best Punjabi plays of the last 65 years. The film is an adaptation of the play.
The latest news is that the veteran singer Rekha Bhardwaj has lent her voice for the movie. She is considered as one of the most influential figures in the music industry, the singer has sung a song titled Ki Bedarda Sang Yaari in the movie. It's a heart touching number composed by Shashwat Sachdev that follows the semi-classic style of Hindustani music called thumri.
Commenting on this Rekha Bhardwaj says, “I got related with Saavi – A Bonded Bride as Munna Dhiman lyricist has worked with Vishal Bhardwaj, Ram Sampath among others, he is more of a friend for us. He once told me that Rajeev Kumar, the director of the film, wants to meet me and I knew of Rajeev as his wife is a good friend of mine but I had never met him. So Munna asked me, can I sing song for Rajeev’s film and I said why not? It felt really nice when I met him and we connected instantly. And as he told me about the subject of the film I really liked it, as its heart touching and it deals with the very sensitive issue of barter of women."
The story of Saavi is interestingly based on watta-satta – the barter system for women that exists in certain communities in the Chamba area of Himachal Pradesh. Saavi – A Bonded Bride is produced by Bhanu Sharma. The movie is helmed by National Award winning director Rajeev Kumar.
