She will be playing a 1000 year old alien!
While the trailers of Stars Wars: The Force Awakens showed most of its key players, Lupita Nyong'o's role was still kept in the dark, along with that of Luke Skywalker.
All we know about her character was that she would be using motion capture for her role, so that means even if we have seen her in the trailers, we are bound to miss her under those CGI prosthetics. But not to worry, JJ Abrams, the director of the upcoming Star Wars sequel, have finally revealed what her character will be. And for all the fellow Star Wars nerds, I am going to spell it out slowly. She... is... going... to... be... a... 1000... year... old... alien!
Yup, you read it right! She will be playing the fully CGI alien pirate queen, Maz Kanata, the small character who appears to the left of Daisy Ridley in the poster for the seventh installment in the sci-fi series.
This is what JJ Abrams has to say about the character. “I had some specific ideas about how she would work and what she would do. I had this pitch about these goggles that she wore. Her eyes are an important aspect of her character, and you’ll see how it plays out. Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time. She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the 'Star Wars' universe."
Nyong’o is herself excited about getting into the CGI 'skin' of the character. “As an actor for films, your eyes are a lot of the way you communicate anyway. So it was definitely a gift to have that be the means to her magic as a motion-capture character.”
Lupita Nyong'o had impressed the world with her tragic rendition of the tortured slave in 12 Years A Slave, for which she won the Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actress. Let's hope her new role will be an out of the world experience for her fans! Now where are you hiding, Luke?
