Rise of a visionary: Dr Subhash Chandra’s journey from modest roots to media legend

Few journeys capture grit and instinct like Dr Subhash Chandra’s. He was born in Adampur Mandi, Haryana, he began working as a teenager in his family’s grain business. While other kids went to school, he was bargaining with traders, learning supply chains and understanding how real businesses run. Those early years shaped his belief that entrepreneurship grows out of struggle, not comfort. Spotting Opportunities Before Anyone Else Long before India spoke about start-ups, Dr Chandra was already reinventing industries. In the 1980s, he realised India depended on imported laminated tubes for toothpaste and cosmetics. He built Essel Propack, which went on to become one of the world’s biggest laminated tube manufacturers. This became his signature, entering new sectors before others even noticed the opportunity.

The Moment Indian Television Changed Forever

TRENDING NOW

In 1992, when India had only Doordarshan and private TV seemed impossible, Dr Chandra took a bold leap. He secured a transponder on AsiaSat — a huge risk at that time. And on 2 October 1992, Zee TV was launched. It became India’s first private satellite channel and completely transformed how the nation watched television. Zee soon grew into a network of entertainment, movies, music, regional channels and news.

Building an Entertainment Empire

After Zee TV, Dr Chandra expanded into multiple sectors:

Zee News and WION
To ensure India had its own global voice and narrative.

Dish TV and Siti Networks
Bringing digital broadcasting to millions of Indian homes.

Kidzee, Mount Litera and Zee Learn
Making quality education accessible to Tier-2 and Tier-3 India.

Essel World and Water Kingdom
Introducing India to large-scale amusement parks.

Each venture proved one thing: he was not just building companies, he was building industries. His Leadership Style: Think Ahead, Stay Honest, Keep Reinventing

Dr Subhash Chandra’s approach has always stood on three principles:

Stay ahead of the market - He entered packaging, satellite TV, DTH and amusement parks before anyone else.
Integrity first- Even during the Essel Group debt crisis, he publicly acknowledged mistakes and focused on repaying lenders.
Learn from setbacks - He often says failures teach more than success, a belief that helped him rebuild whenever needed.
