This love story will surely leave a mark!
Picture this: It's 9 am on a Friday morning and the theatre is filled to the brim. No, it is not for a big starter Bollywood film, but a Marathi movie. A few years ago, this feat could've been an unimaginable feat! The film opens amidst loud cheers of audience as the Hero of the move, a newcomer teenager Akash Thosar (Parshya), runs in the fields a la
Shah Rukh Khan style just to catch one glimpse of his ladylove, a delightful Rinku Rajguru, who comes from a wealthy, political family.
So, the film ( keeping true to the
Fandry director's forte) is set in the hinterlands of Maharashtra. Bittergaon is a typical village probably located around the Western Ghats, near Solapur, where caste system is still prevalent, where grannies and parents come to whack their kids amidst an IPL version of a cricket match if they shirk their duties! So the lead protagonist has fallen hopelessly in love with Archie who lets say is a total BADASS. So you thought that the village women a bholi and sharmili types? Well Nagraj Manjule will prove you wrong for his female lead abuses, yells at boys and pulls them out of a well in their underwear mind you just as she and her girl gang dive deep into the waters! You would fall for her spunk, and badassery and never recover. Just like our HERO. Sairat is an old love story but reimagined with Manjules characteristic style and Ajay-Atul's brilliant sound score. Man, you'd be a fool to miss this treat.
The first half shows a heart warming coming together of Parshya and Archie in the most rustic, romantic way possible. The scene where the hero meets heroine will send goosebumps down your spine if you are true romantic. Yeah, the film has all the elements of a typical romantic potboiler like the pehli nazar ka asar, the first touch, romantic songs and all the drama! In Manjule's world, men check out women keeping the caste and status in mind. Here, it is one thing to love someone silently and on sidedly but you must be damn lucky to get the same attention from your lady love. The lady in question though is a lot like the quintessential MAN. She doesn't care about marks, loves to ride and swim and has a lot of swag! While our HERO here is mooning over Archie, she too likes him albeit her steely gaze and tough exterior. He declares his love to her via a lot of to and fro of letters. Parshya gets into a brawl with Archie's cousin she comes and saves his ass. Her love is declared.
Parshya and Archie finally kiss in a car a la Titanic. There is but one glitch. Archie's father ( the corrupt MLA) sees them. And the inevitable happens. Her father's men separate them as the two run away for their life. The chase begins. The kids put up a brave fight but the father gets better of them. Catches hold of them and books Parshya and his family for kidnapping and rape.Archie throws a fit and gets them released. No, she doesn't stop at that. When she sees her father's henchmen beating up her lover boy,she takes a gun and simply shoots one of them. The first half ends here.
I am all prepped for an intense, dramatic second half. Stay tuned on BollywoodLife for the full review.
