Omung Kumar is all set to impress his masses with Sarabjit tomorrow...
After successfully making Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra, Omung Kumar is back once again with yet another biopic based on the trying life and times of Sarabjit Singh. He has roped in Randeep Hooda to play the titular role and Aishwarya Rai to play his sister Dalbir Kaur. While the trailer looks sure impressive, we are waiting for Sarbajit to blow us away.
BollywoodLife caught up with the master director before the release of Sarabjit as he spoke about his journey through the film and what the subject means to him. He also spoke about Aishwarya and Randeep's dramatic transformations for the role. Read on.
It is an uncanny co-incidence that Omung's second film is a biopic too. While speaking about it he revealed that he essentially did NOT want to do a biopic. He says, "I did not want to make another biopic. I said no when the movie first come to me last year. I was very clear about that. The script came to me and I liked it but not so much. Then, I saw the visuals and I was blown. I said's who's this feisty, fiery lady who is commanding respect. The subject appealed to me as a human being and propelled me to do this movie. It touched."
Omung describes Aishwarya as a director's actor and narrates that a surprising casting like her SURPRISES people. "I always knew that what I saw in Dalbir Kaur if I manage to show her that then she will straightway say yes. And that's what happened. She said yes in 15 minutes flat." He further added, "Half the battle is won because his actors have given their heart and soul to the project. "Ash is not Ash or Randeep is not Randeep. They have become the characters."
About Randeep's casting, Omung said, "I wanted someone who would be able to remarkably transform himself. I narrated him the script and he said yes in flat 20 minutes. I told him I want to see your bones, I want you to see you dilapidated and frail. I went out and came in again and said yes! I am doing the film. This was a role for life . But that was one part. The other part was how Randeep internalised the character."
Omung said how he did a googly on Randeep and made him shoot the prison sequences first. "Randeep had put on weight so ideally, we were supposed to film his Punjab portions where he is healthy first. But that didn't happen. He reduced 18 kilograms in 28 days. He went through hell. He went through mental torture for the movie. He demarcated a small (6/4) area in his apartment and chained himself."
Omung is all praise for Aishwarya who also took up method acting to get into the skin of her character. Omung says, "Aishwarya is amazing with the continuity. She would come on the sets, and she won't move until the pack up." He says that she is a dream to work with and does not have any starry airs. Talking about her transformation, he narrated a funny incident. They were shooting at Wagah Border and Ash was sitting in her Dalbir get up. There were people teaming up to see the beauty queen but none of them could recognise her!
