Bollywood has dolled out some terrific actors and performers but when it comes hosting awards ceremony we get to see almost the same stars each year taking the center stage. Is there a dearth of good hosts in tinsel town?
Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Shahid Kapoor have often entertained us as awards show hosts. They are funny, witty and at the same time mean. They poke fun at the stars and yet manage not to offend them. Apart from King Khan, KJo and Sasha, even Boman Irani and Saif Ali Khan have hosted awards ceremony quite a few times but for the longest time I can't remember any new face hosting a prestigious awards show which is disappointing because the industry that we are talking about is entertainment. Then why do we have such few options as far as entertaining hosts are concerned? Maybe the awards show organisers don't look beyond A-listers in a bid to create hype around their event.
But what they forget is - if you keep repeating your hosts, the monotonous routine does get boring especially with B-town stars because they usually don't improvise unlike a stand-up comedian or a conversational wizard would do. Like this year we had popular stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma hosting the Star Guild Awards which was indeed refreshing. He is someone who doesn't need script to crack up wise jokes and that's a big USP. It makes the whole show look spontaneous, isn't it?
Someone like Rahul Khanna who is well-read and spoken could easily become an entertaining host. In the same league there is Mini Mathur who has hosted many reality shows that too quite well. Manish Paul is another candidate who can make the audience laugh and poke fun at the stars without being mean or outright nasty.
There are many potential celebs who could turn entertaining hosts but they won't take the center stage unless the show organisers start looking beyond the B-town bigwigs!
