The Rajinikanth wave could be detrimental but is it?
On July 6, Salman Khan lodged himself at the box office with Sultan and is refusing to move from that position. It is continuing to post enviable numbers on the tally which are setting newer benchmarks. But this Friday it has to face Rajinikanth's Kabali. Will it sustain or perish? Our Trade Analysts have this to say.
When asked if Rajinikanth can spoil the fun for Sultan, Trade expert Amul Mohan (Editor of Super Cinema) says, "It's a different ball game altogether. Also, this weekend Sultan will enter week 3. Generally, numbers tend to start dropping because people who wanted to see the film have already done so in past two weeks. I feel in the third week people are wanting to watch something different. A star like Rajinikanth is coming back after a long time. People have a lot of expectation from this film. Like how Salman Khan's film release is an event in India, same goes for Rajinikanth's film. It depends on how strong Sultan's week 2 is and how it enters week 3. Also, Kabali doesn't have a pan-India appeal like Baahubali. People wanted to see what the latter was all about but I don't think same is the case with Kabali."
We decided to get an insight on the same from yet another Trade expert Akshaye Rathi and he gave some really interesting instances to prove his point. "See down South every cinema and every show's gonna play Kabali. So whether it is Sultan or Great Grand Masti or Madaari, nothing's going to show up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh. (Laughs) It's like God giving darshan. While Fox Star is not going too wide up North, it has significant number of screens. It will be huge draw. Just to give you an example. Arora Cinemas in Matunga turns into Chennai the day a Rajinikanth film releases. It's insanity. There will be houseful boards for days together. Similarly, there are also a few North Indian belts where Rajinikanth is huge. In Chhattisgarh, there is a town called Bhilai. Half of the population works in the Bhilai Steel Plant and most of these people have migrated from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Same for Nagpur. Now, Sultan had a massive first week and a significantly good second week. I am sure YRF has that clout with distribution network, so they will retain good number shows up north. But there will be the Rajinikanth wave coming up in July 22."
It seems Sultan doesn't really have to fear much here but then you never know!
