While mystery thrillers are a huge hit in the West, Bollywood has not seen to many successful whodunits in recent times. With many films of the genre fizzing out, makers too are apprehensive about attempting a film like this. But now, Red Chillies Entertainment, Dharma Productions and BR Films are coming together to produce the remake of the hit 1969 murder mystery Ittefaq.more.
The remake, as informed earlier, stars Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles. But the story won't be the same anymore. Sid explains, "It's not exactly the same. The premise will be different although the gist is the same. It is still about one night but we have modified the scripone t. Otherwise everyone knows what it's all about and there would be no fun. All the characters here are motivated differently."
Another thing that Sidharth reveals is the shorter rune time, which we think will work for a thriller like this, "It will be a very short, quick film. We want to make it in a very thrilling manner- in two hours or maybe less than that if we can. That's our plan." The Ittefaq remake rolls early next year and will probably hit screens in the later half of 2017. For those who don't know, a Yash Chopra directorial, the 1969 film Ittefaq starred Rajesh Khanna and Nanda. It itself was a remake of the British film, Singpost To Murder (1964). It is all about a painter suspected of killing his wife. It was also one of the few films of that era in Bollyood that is known to be songless. In that sense, it was similar to the 1960 film, Kanoon that also had no songs. It was from the same production house with same leading lady, Nanda. The film did not earn a lot of moolah when it got released but is hailed as one of the best films of the late Yash Chopra.
“I am extremely excited for ‘Ittefaq’. It is a remake of the super-hit 1969 film ‘Ittefaq.’ The benchmark for me has already been set as superstar Rajesh Khanna was a part of the film back then, and I have to match up to his acting abilities in this remake,” Sidharth told a news portal. The handsome hunk, who made his foray into Bollywood with the 2012 film Student of the Year, says the film’s script is brilliant and it would be a new screen character for him.
