Akshay Kumar is on a roll this year. After tasting success with Baby, Gabbar Is Back and Brothers, the Khiladi Kumar is back playing the goofy happy go lucky Raftaar Singh in Singh Is Bliing. Directed by Prabhu Dheva, the film stars Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta and Kay Kay Menon. With just two weeks to go for the release, the music of Singh Is Bliing is out. Composed by over 5 music directors, will Singh Is Bliing album manage to replicate the success of Singh Is Kinng's music? Lets find out!
Tung Tung Baje
We are welcomed by the rustic rendition of Sneha Khanwalkar's Punjabi number Tung Tung Baje. Sung by Diljit Dosanjh and ably supported by Jyoti and Sultana Noora, Tung Tung Baje takes you to the heartland of Punjab with its punjabi dhols and earthy sounds. Written and composed by Sneha Khanwalkar, the song was originally produced for MTV’s Sound Trippin where Sneha would explore 10 different places in India and compose a song for each place with the unusual sounds she heard there. Given that this was her song for Punjab, it seems very fitting to use it as an introduction to our Bliing Singh, Akshay. The mix of rustic sounds, Punjabi folk beats and techno beats gives a rich flavour to the song. Diljit Dosanjh's powerful voice drives the song forward and you would be amazed by the kinda energy his voice infuses to the song. Overall, Tung Tung Baje is a great start to the album.
Dil Kare Chu Che
Next in line is Meet Bros's Dil Kare Chu Che. Known to dish out one party anthem after another, Meet Bros have collaborated with Labh Janjua and Apeksha Dandekar to come up with a crazy number with even crazier lyrics. I mean who writes like this Dil Kare Chu Che Chu Che? But despite of lyrics which may sound ridiculous on paper, when it is combined with Meet Bros tunes, the effect is quirky and catchy as hell. There is the unmistakable Punjabi flavour but Apeksha Dandekar's western style of singing comes off as a surprise element. With heavy Punjabi beats and synthesiser elements fused together, you get a crazy party number that will get you grooving. You just got to get past the juvenile sounding lyrics and then you will surely have fun with this number.
Singh & Kaur
It is time for Manj Musik to show his Punjabi prowess. Singh & Kaur sung by Manj Musik and Nindy Kaur, is a cool, foot-tapping number which will be a huge hit among the Punjabi audience. Though the tempo of the song is not pacy enough, the electronic beats and the Punjabi flavour of the song drives it forward. Raftaar's rap portion is the USP of the song as it is quite catchy and quirky and some of it lyrics like ‘mere sar pe hai mera taj’ (referring to the turban) will make you go wow. While Manj Musik's vocals give the much needed rustic effect to the song, Nindy Kaur's heavy powerful voice sounds a bit off. Overall, the song is quite enjoyable. Singh & Kaur Remix version stays true to the original and doesn't try to tamper much with the tempo of the song. Infact, the remix version adds more rustic and Punjabi beats to the song, which makes it an enjoyable listen.
Cinema Dekhe Mamma
Singh Is Bliing music album doesn't seem to be short of quirky craziness. Next is Cinema Dekhe Mamma, which is actually a romantic number but it is far from your regular soulful stuff. Composed of Sajid Wajid, and sung by the trio of Shaan, Wajid and Ritu Pathak, the song is more of a flashy love number that focuses on the crazy dynamics of Akshay and Amy's romance. With its 90's style of orchestration, the song will remind you of old Govinda numbers. Shaan's voice is melodious as always but it is Wajid's vocals that adds the edgy flavour to it. While I am all game for craziness and fun elements in music, Cinema Dekhe Mamma loses focus in delivering praiseworthy music and gets into over indulgent mode of quirkiness.
At last, Singh Is Bliing gets its sober love song that will pull your heart strings. In an album ladden with fun, funky numbers, Mahi Aaja sung by Manj Musik and Sasha stands out as the lone soulful number. Though the song is less crazy and more melodious than the other numbers, there is enough Punjabi elements and pace in the song to become a hit among the masses. The track is groovy and will make you want to get up and swing right away. The beats are the best part about this number and I would like to give a shout out to Manj Musik and Sasha for coming up with a happening track as such. Mahi Aaja Remix Version just about manages not to murder the soul of the love ballad with its heavy club beats and techno fusion elements. The remix version is otherwise disappointing. Arijit Singh lovers are gonna love his melodious rendition of Mahi Aaja in the unplugged version. Arijit Singh teams up with Manj Musik and the result is a musical magic as you get to hear Arijit Singh like never before.
Verdict: Laden with fun, quirky and crazy Punjabi flavour, the music of Singh Is Bliing manages to capture the true Punjabi essence and is one of the most enjoyable albums of the year. So just turn up the volume and listen to Singh Is Bliing's Punjabi numbers as it proves to be an ultimate dance fest for all the Punjabi folk lovers.
Our Pick: Tung Tung Baje, Mahi Aaja, Singh & Kaur
