Sonam Kapoor was ecstatic last night after receiving her first National Award from the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. And even though it is a special mention in the Best Actor's category, this is a remarkable achievement by the actress. Sonam had delivered a fantastic performance in Neerja last year and many felt that she would sweep all the popular awards for 2016. But that was not the case, Alia Bhatt bagged most of these popular film awards. Buzz was that Sonam and her fans were mighty miffed, because they felt that the actress was snubbed despite her brilliant performance. Sonam was brave and even attended some of these award functions. With the National Award win for Neerja the actress must be feeling vindicated. Sonam accepted the award yesterday and the actress was accompanied by her father Anil Kapoor and beau Anand Ahuja. In an interview post the win Sonam made a very valid point and managed to make a valid point about Bollywood stars who lobby for awards.
While talking about winning the National Award and father, Anil Kapoor's gush fest about her achievement, the actress took a sly dig at her contemporaries by suggesting that a few of them lobby for awards. As Sonam mentioned to HT Cafe, "He (Anil Kapoor) is too sweet (for saying nice things about the win). But it’s amazing because I am here with my parents and it’s a matter of great pride. For me receiving the award being Anil Kapoor’s daughter is the biggest joy because I don’t lobby for awards. Funnily, I didn’t feel any pressure or nervousness, I just feel light because this is a huge validation. Contrary to what people think, I work really hard on every project and I do it with a lot of integrity. When a film (Neerja) like this wins an award, it’s reassuring as everyone is part of a competition and the rat race. It’s about putting your head down, being focussed and working at your own pace. I’ve realised that aggression doesn’t work in the long run. It affects you mentally and physically, and eventually burns you out. If you are kind and honest, it should be enough." But why had she not spoken about her National award win till now? Sonam revealed to the daily, "I am really shy and awkward about these things. I am ecstatic with the Best Hindi Film award and of course, the special mention for me too, but I just can’t take credit for it solely. It’s such a happy occasion and I am elated that our film was recognised for this honour."
