Sonu Nigam's recent remarks on the Muslim tradition of Azaan has snowballed into a huge controversy. The singer was woken up by the loudspeaker used by a local mosque (used to call everyone for prayer) on Monday morning. This angered the singer so much that he went on a religious rant on Twitter. He started off by tweeting, "God bless everyone. I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India?" He went on to slam the practice of using loudspeakers and even called it as "Gundagardi." And while Twitterati trolled him for these comments, a few Bollywood stars came out in support of him. uite a few disagreed too. One such person who was not impressed by Sonu's remarks was Wajid Khan. The composer tweeted to Sonu about it, but the singer slammed Wajid's stance on the Azaan controversy!
In a series of tweets, Wajid wrote on Twitter, "I'm hurt as my dearest brother @sonunigam tweeted such words about #Azaan and not being a Muslim. #Gundagiri, knowing you never expected this, not from you. @sonunigam we know each other for more than 25 years and today the whole day I kept getting calls about your tweets but I was speechless. I agree @sonunigam that everyone has their own point of view but that it can be said without hurting others sentiments. Hope you'll understand where this is coming from."
But rather than understanding Wajid's point, Sonu had something else to say. He said, "Dear @wajidkhan7. If for once you stop being a Muslim and simply be a Citizen of India, you will see what everyone is truly talking about. Love." Wajid also had a comeback on this remark, as he added, "Bhai @sonunigam I'm proud of my faith and my identity as an Indian. If it was about loudspeakers then it should've been only about loudspeaker."
Sonu Nigam tried to clear his point once again, when he said, "It was about Loudspeaker, and only loudspeaker. Too bad that they are on Mosques, Temples and Gurudwaras, thus the reference. Let's be human first."
The controversy kept growing and FIR were filed against the ace musician in Mumbai and Aurangabad. But the singer is not worried as he stands by his remarks. As he mentioned on Twitter, "Dear everyone. Your stand exposes your own IQ. I stand by my statement that loudspeakers should not be allowed in mosques and temples." When Mid-day reached out to the singer for understanding his point, Sonu simply said, "I have said what I had to. the rest is for the world to decipher."
