After entraining us with her Sansa Stark act in Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner will reprise in her superhero avatar of Jean Grey for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Touted to be the final movie in the X-Men series, the Dark Phoenix is gearing up to hit the screens next month and it has been revealed that the film’s climax was reshot.
According to Yahoo, the end sequence of the film was changed as it resembled another superhero movie. Dark Phoenix wrapped up its shoot in October 2017, but a reshoot in August-September 2018 was scheduled, which delayed the film’s release to June 2019. James McAvoy, who plays Charles Xavier in Dark Phoenix, told Yahoo, “The end (of Dark Phoenix) changed a hell of a lot. The finale had to change. There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out... a while ago. And we had no idea that we were...” Completing his statement co-star Michael Fassbender, who plays Erik Magneto Lensherr said, “They had spies on set. and [they] basically stole our ideas.” Leaving the speculation open-ended, the duo didn’t divulge which movie they were referring to.
Going by the superhero films which released recently, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel seems like the apt movie whose climax could clash with Sophie’s Jean Grey act. Director Simon Kinberg had previously revealed how they had reworked the VFX around Jean Grey’s transformation into Dark Phoenix, going from less flame-y to a more cosmic avatar. And while Dark Phoenix hints of a climax in space, Captain Marvel also saw an ending with a spaceship being set off in earth’s orbit. Hence it seems like Captain Marvel was the competition Jen Grey was fielding.
Sharing her opinion on the reworked climax of Dark Phoenix, Sophie was quoted in the interview, “I think it’s so much better for the reshoots. It was just one of those things that was where the third act... you watch the first two acts and the third act just didn’t feel cohesive. We went back and we redid all of the third act, pretty much, and it was such a good decision. The third act is the best part of the movie for me.” While Jessica Chastain, who plays the mysterious shape-shifting alien in the film, voiced that the script was every changing. “My character changed a lot. Which is an interesting thing, because I’m not playing someone from the comics, so it was almost like every day trying to figure out ‘who am I?’, the mystery of who is this character. And then understanding that also with the reshoots realising it was changing again. It was a constant evolution, which I guess in some sense is like theatre. It always moves, it’s never really done.”
