Deepika, Farhan do watch this show on Star Plus... Suhani Si Ik Ladki will single-handedly bring down all your efforts towards WOMEN EMPOWERMENT and in fact take you 10 steps backwards!
In a time when celebrities, NGOs and the society in general, are putting in efforts to establish an equal status for women in changing India, there are shows like Suhaani Si Ek Ladki that are so regressive that will make you cringe. While a lot is being said and done to empower women, this show is reinforcing every unwanted and unwarranted stereotype about women that we are so desperately trying to eradicate.
I can't even understand where to begin... To start with let's just look at the basic story.
Glaring racism - So a girl Suhani (Rajshri Rani Pandey) is not fair and maybe not conventionally good-looking, hence, her in-laws don't treat her well. Does no one find this annoying? I agree that this mentality does exist in the society but portraying it on national TV as though and making it acceptable is not easy to digest. But that's just the tip of the sh@tty ice berg.
Modern woman = Vamp! According to this show all things desi or at least all desi women are angels, while the modern girl is a b@tch! In one of the episodes, Dadi banned Soumya (Neha Yadav) from wearing westerns and asks her to wear "decent" clothes. Because if you are to become a Birla bahu, you have to stop wearing westerns. And I'm not even talking about shorts and minis, I'm talking about kurtis and long skirts. Again the only thing that comes to my mind is... WHY? When Dadi accepted Soumya to be her grandson Yuvraj's (Sahil Mehta) wife, she knew that Soumya wears the so-called indecent clothes. Then why change it now? Even their servant is shown staring at the elder daughter-in-law when she wore a skirt. Yet again... Why?
Working women also = B1tch! Another rule is that Birla Bahus are prohibited from working. And guess what? If you try to work you become the evilest of evil persons ever born on the face of this earth. According to the show, wanting to make a career makes you selfish and mean, but only if you are a woman. Men can go ahead with doing whatever they want. Now I'm more worried about how this is being perceived by people who're already narrow minded. What next after we've established that ideal bahus are not career oriented, dampen women education... because, you know, they're just going to turn into house-helps so why bother.
Women = Kitchen commodity - And if all this wasn't bad enough, the latest episode showcased a competition titled "Adarsh Naari" or the Ideal Woman; translation: all the stereotype multiplied by 10. "Aadarsh Naari competition hai toh sab kitchen ka hi samaan hoga na" is a dialogue I heard at the beginning of the show. When a show portrays women as someone who should be doing nothing else other than preparing delicacies for her family, I prepare myself to be demeaned as a woman. Now this competition involves making something unique out of whatever is handed to you in a box. And guess what these boxes contained... beads, decoration stuff, vegetables. So any lady who cannot make good use of these things becomes less of a woman. (Slow clap).
There are many more such incidents that I can recall but I'm not sure how long can I go on. I'm don't know why people make a fuss over things like AIB roast and films on homosexuality or child abuse, when we have this crap being fed to the nation on a daily basis. 'Why' is the big question here!
