Sui Dhaaga released today and has Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in the lead. It is yet another small town story about people who dream big and achieve it too. It is directed by Dum Laga Ke Haisha director Sharat Katariya. Our Editor In Chief is presently watching the film and this is what the first half is all about.
Sui Dhaga is the story of Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and Mamta (Anushka Sharma) who might come from a small town but their heart is aching to dream big. Despite their circumstances and the poverty that engulfs them, Mamta’s grit and Mauji’s belief that he wants to be his own boss is what becomes the narrative of the first half. Sui Dhaaga goes all out in ensuring that the mood and setting of the story are in the right place. You feel for Mauji’s pain and his strife in struggling to realise his dreams and ambitions. Having a good hand at tailoring his plans to start his own enterprise that makes clothes and embroidery. Mamta is his pillar of support who despite the odds eggs him on into going ahead and not succumbing to the pressures and odds. The first half of Sui Dhaaga has several emotional scenes and both Varun and Anushka have done an exemplary job of playing these simple characters. Their dialect and body language are in sync with the characters they play. A fresh pairing of Varun and Anushka are easy with each other and seem comfortable in their roles as husband-wife. Throughout the first half, you root and champion for Mauji and Mamta and hope that they are winners in their task of bringing the Made in India belief into existence. An important scene which involves Mauji giving a stitching exam to procure the machine is a major highlight and sets the context of how badly these characters want to achieve their dream. Throughout the narrative, Varun and Anushka ensure that they don’t leave their characters behind and capture us with their simplicity and honesty. The second half perhaps will bring in new challenges for Mamta and Mauji.
