Oh! What a year it has been till now!
Last year, it was South or to be specific, Telugu industry that made the most headlines when it comes to films thanks to a little film called Baahubali. Since then, all the eyes are looking down South to see if we can expect any wonder from there this year as well.
While Baahubali 2 will only come next year, there have been some gems that may not be as expensive and epic as the SS Rajamouli flick, but they stand strongly on their own.
In Telugu industry, many tried to fill the blockbuster hole left by Baahubali, but it was Allu Arjun's Sarrainodu, Jr NTR's Nannaku Prematho and Nagarjuna's bilingual Oopiri manages some success. In Kollywood, Suriya's 24 managed to win everyone, be it the classes and the masses, while Vijay redeemed himself from the Puli debacle with Theri. In Kannada cinema, RGV made an impact with Killin Veerappan. While in Mollywood, there had been some really interesting films like Nivin Pauly's Jacobinte Swargarajyam, Dulquer's Kamattipaadam, Prithviraj's Paavada and others.
Let's look at 5 actors in South who gave the best performances of the first half of 2016!
Suriya
What a comeback! After some disappointing turns in a few of his recent films like Maassu, Suriya returns to form in his triple role in Vikram M Kumar's' sci fi fantasy flick, Vikram M Kumar's 24. Though he was great as the meek Dr Sethuraman and his roguish son, Mani, it was his role as the villainous but brilliant Athreya that hammered the point as to what a fine and enigmatic actor he is! Let's hope he continues his good form here on.
Nagarjuna
It's not easy to play a character where you can only express yourself from neck above, but Nagarjuna proved that it was just a walk in the park for him in the bilingual Oopiri. Though Karthi might have the more mass friendly role in the film, and he is fantastic in that as well, but it was Nagarjuna's wonderful performance that was the soul of the film!
Vijay Sethupathi
God, will this man never stop? After the career-making role in Pizza, Vijay Sethupathi has not looked back and has been climbing every step of success with never-wavering dedication and winning hearts left right and centre with his amazing performances. This year, he had 3 releases and he scored in all three of them. In Sethupathi, he gave a different spin to the role of a heroic cop, and won a lot of plaudits for the same. In Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum, he plays the mischievous goon who scares no one with enough hilarity and pathos, while in Iraivi, he is simply amazing as the married man who lusts after the wife of his deceased friend. He is surely a gem for Tamil cinema!
Dulquer Salmaan
After the super success of OK Kanmani and his award winning performance in Charlie, Dulquer is an actor everyone is looking to surprise us. And he doesn't disappoint us the protagonist with grey shades in Rajeev Kumar's noir thriller
