The doe eyed beauty got candid about her big release as she spoke her heart out about Akshay Kumar, action scenes and Baby
Last year a lot of Bollywood babes proved that action flicks are not just male actor’s forte. Priyanka Chopra did it with Mary Kom. Rani Mukerji did it with Mardaani. At the start of this year, we see Chashme Baddor hottie, Taapsee Pannu, returning to big screen after nearly two years, with Akshay Kumar’s Baby. After witnessing the kind of stunts this leggy lass has pulled off, the insiders in the industry claim that Taapsee is not just back, she is back with a bang. I had the opportunity to speak to the gorgeous actress as we discussed about Baby, South films and her stint in Bollywood.
You are coming back to films after nearly two years. Why such a long break?
I think you should ask this question to the producers, because I have been working. I worked in RunningShaadi.com before this and then I took up Baby. They(producers) decided to release Baby first and then RunningShaadi.com. It is not something in my hand. I have been working continuously since Chashme Badoor was released.
A lot of actresses now-a-days are doing more action oriented roles. How is your role in Baby different from what we have seen?
Well, it is very different. And that’s precisely why I took up Baby. I have done those kind of typical heroine roles in my films down south. Baby gave me chance to be one of the heroes. I talk less in the film. I have more action sequences than talking in the film. I am this kind of no nonsense person in Baby. There is no emotional angle to my character. That way, it is going to be very different from any other heroine character.
Does that mean you don’t have any romantic angle in the film?
No, I don’t.
In this film there is an another actress, Madhurima, who plays Akshay Kumar’s wife. Would you have accepted if that role was offered to you, considering that Baby is a big film?
When I got to know about this film, only Akshay was finalised in the cast. So when I got to know about Baby, I wanted this role. I didn’t even think about the other role, neither was I offered the other role. There were no two ways for me or a choice, I just wanted to do this role. I didn’t even care about the other role, or what scope that character had in the film. I was really happy with my role.
Your previous film was a multi-starrer. Now Baby is multi starrer and even Runningshaadi.com is a multi-starrer flick. Why this affinity towards multi-starrers?
Runningshaadi should not be considered as multistarrer. It has three central characters, but has only one hero and one heroine. Yes, Chashme Badoor was a multi-starrer. But, since I was the only heroine, it was not like a multi-starrer for me. I was the girl with whom three guys wanted to be with. Baby is a true multi-starrer film. And that’s how all Neeraj Pandey films are. Even if it is led by a known hero, his films are always about ensemble. The movie would not be complete with each and every character in the film. So I think that is a perfect way to feature in an ensemble, where you know that without your character, the movie is not going to move forward.
Was it intimidating to work in an action flick along the likes of Akshay Kumar and Rana Daggubati, who have done a lot of action films in the past?
I had not done an action sequence before. That was one of the reasons why I chose this role in Baby. I wanted to do something which I have not done before. Yes, it was a little stressful and I was a little nervous doing a solo actions sequence in an Akshay Kumar movie, and that too an action movie. And his standard of action is so high that it is difficult to match up with it. But it was also a driving a factor for me as you don’t always get a chance to show your versatility. You don’t get to do a solo action scene every day. Plus, it is an Akshay Kumar movie. It doesn’t get better than that.
Your film is releasing along with Sonam Kapoor’s Dolly Ki Doli, which is also a big film like Baby. Do you think it would eat in to your film’s profit?
First of all, the two movies that are releasing are so different from one another. We are gonna have very diverse audience. Plus we have a long weekend, so people will have lot of time to watch both the films. I think both films will be benefited by the holidays that are coming. And secondly, I don’t think, any film can eat up anything out of Baby. The buzz it has created since the trailer was released is phenomenal.
You are doing a film with Akshay Kumar now. Going forward, would you like to work with only big stars?
I am doing Agra Ka Dabra with Ayushmann after this. I did not choose Baby because it is an Akshay Kumar film. I don’t choose a film because it has a big star in it. The reason why I choose a movie is the director, the story and my character. A big star is an added bonus. As you can see a lot of new girls feature in a big star movie. It is not really that difficult to get into a big star movie if that is what you want to do. The right thing is which movie of the big star you want to be in. And I choose this.
You have done handful of south films. Do you think doing films down south gives actresses a better chance to succeed in Bollywood?
It does help you get noticed. Of late, people have taken sudden notice of south films. A lot of actors and actresses from south are now working in Bollywood. Yes, it does help you to get noticed. But that wasn’t the reason I did South films. I never planned to act in a movie. South films or Bollywood...everything looked unlikely for me as I did not want to act at first place. It is destiny’s play that I am now an actress. So, it is not like I chose South films as a route to enter Bollywood. South film industries are no lesser than Bollywood in present times.
In your upcoming Tamil film, Vai Raja Vai, you seem to be playing a character with grey shade. Tell us more about it.
It’s a special appearance. I won’t even call it as a full fledged movie for me. There is gonna be some grey shade in the character. It is going to be edgy , I am neither on the side of the hero nor on the side of the villain. There is something very interesting about the role, that is why I agreed to be a part of the film as special appearance.
If given a choice, which Bollywood actor would you love to be paired with?
Hrithik Roshan...I have a crush on him since years. And I would love to work with him. No second thoughts there.
