Sometimes reel does affect real life and more so if you are an actor...
I remember the first time I met Sonam Kapoor she was doing interviews for Delhi 6. Dressed in a casual tee she welcomed reporters in her Juhu house. It was my first meet with Sonam, till then I had read her interviews, seen her on the screen, but never met her in person. The Sonam off screen is very different from what you see her on screen, in the sense that she has a childlike innocence and charm that captivates you from the moment you get chatty.
Sonam's first reaction on meeting me was, "That's a cute t-shirt!". For someone who has zero fashion sense I put out a polite smile and decided to bombard her with my questions. It is only after several years that I realised that Sonam complimenting my Tee meant a lot! Before being labelled a fashionista and a style icon Sonam was just another girl having fun with her clothes. The fact that style and fashion experts and the media took notice of what she wore every time she stepped out just made her stay on the fashion pages a bit longer.
It hasn't been easy for Sonam, given the fact that she didn't aggressively promote herself when she didn't have a release or talk about issues because it was 'cool'. Just 14 films old the actress has had her fair share of brickbats. If the clothes she wore made headlines, so did some of the quotes she gave in her candid interviews. Learning not to speak her mind wasn't easy for her (remember the infamous Koffee with Karan episode?).
The girl from Saawariya bears resemblance to the strong willed Neerja Bhanot she played in her last release. Sonam has proved her detractors wrong by investing in a film that has not only given her career a boost, but also reaffirmed that with the right guidance and mentoring she can pull off a film on her own.
In an industry that is ruthless and cruel to actresses, I hope Sonam continues to make brave choices notwithstanding the fear of failure. After all her last film is all about facing your fears!
