It looks like Director Guy Ritchie is finally back to where he belongs. After the two Sherlock movies (very good adaptations, but not really Ritchie's style), the darkly humorous spy thriller, The Man from UNCLE (shades of Ritchie's trademarks), an insipid King Arthur film and Disney's tepid Aladdin (a far cry to what the filmmaker is known for, but nevertheless, a box-office smash), Ritchie looks to be back, doing what he loves the most and we love watching him to do – make crime films, peppered by idiosyncratic characters and dollops of dark humour.
Boasting an all-star cast for the ages, including Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant, The Gentlemen revolves around a marijuana baron who runs the editor of a leading tabloid the wrong, which sets of a chain of unsavoury events involving a private investigator, the right hand of the marijuana baron, the wife of said marijuana barin, a Lord and his heroin-addicted daughter, a Chinese gangster, a young Russian male and a motley bunch of amateur boxers. Needless to say, the repercussions are as deadly as they're hilarious.
